Get over any of the wrecks in the region in the 150-300ft range in March, April or May and you will find Amberjacks. Big AJ’s will school up especially around the full moon, and at times become a nuisance when trying to target grouper, snapper or other species. A big live blue runner, speedo, or pin fish will usually not last long if there are any AJ’s around. We like to fish long 80lb mono leaders with enough weight to hold the bottom, and hook the live bait through the nose with a 9-0 to 12-0 circle hook. Amberjacks are also suckers for butterfly jigs and buck tail jigs tipped with a whole ballyhoo. Some stout 30-50lb tackle is needed to pull these fish out and away from the structure and there are not many fish that pull as hard as a big AJ. Amberjacks usually don’t waste any time biting so if you make a couple of drifts over the wreck without a bite move on to the next one until the fish are located. The average size fish that we see now a days is in the 20-40lb range.

Amberjacks can be caught using a variety of fishing techniques, including trolling, jigging, and live bait fishing. Trolling involves pulling lures behind a moving boat at various depths to attract fish, while jigging involves using a weighted jig to bounce along the bottom and attract fish. Live bait fishing involves using live baitfish such as pilchards, pinfish, or ballyhoo to entice fish to bite.

Some popular spots for Amberjack fishing in Miami include wrecks, artificial reefs, and offshore structures. These fish are typically found in deep water, so it is important to have a boat capable of reaching these areas.
