We have some of the best sailfishing in the world right here in South Florida. Unlike some of the exotic locations, where the sailfish are 20-50 miles offshore, we are fishing only 2-3 miles offshore. We catch sails throughout the year, and December through May are peak months. Finding blue water and north current are key factors when we are looking for sails. We like to network with other fishermen up and down the coast to find where the best water conditions can be found. The most effective way to target sailfish is with live herring, goggle eyes, sardines, and pilchards fished under a kite in 80-250ft of water. If there isn’t enough wind for the kite, slow trolling or drifting the live baits will get the bites. 20lb tackle with 10-15ft of 40-60lb mono or flouro leader and a 6-0 to 7-0 circle hook is the standard sailfish set up. Lately the sailfish bite has been spectacular on days when the current is in close with lots of double digit catch and releases. On the slow or no current days the bite has been fair in the 100-200ft range.
