WAHOO

Wahoo are considered a prize catch and are said to be one of the fastest fish in the ocean. They can be found year round and one of the best times to target wahoo is around the full moons of August, September and October. There are a couple of ways to go about catching wahoo – one of the more productive tactics is to fast troll weighted lures at 10-15 knots or slow down to 6-8 knots and fish a 3 ½  or 4 drone spoon or sea witch and bonito strip combo on a wire line outfit or behind a #2 or 3 planer. Wahoo also love to eat live baits under the kite or on the flat lines. More bites will come off of big baits – a big speedo, blue runner or goggle eye are all good choices. And with the big baits it’s not a bad idea to use a stinger hook. Wahoo also like to hang around floating debris much like dolphin and they can be caught by trolling deep diving Rapalla Magnums or dropping live baits or jigs around and under the floater. A piece of wire leader is a must since wahoo have razor sharp teeth and if there is one rod out with a mono leader it never fails that is the one that the wahoo will bite.  Just like with most of our offshore fish look for blue water with north current in the 100-500 foot range.
