Since pelagic long lines were outlawed in the Florida Straights about 15 years ago, the swordfish have made a great comeback. Traditionally, swordfish were targeted at night, but in the last few years daytime swordfishing has become very popular. Lately, both the daytime and the nighttime bite has been pretty good when the weather cooperates. Typically we fish in 1500 to 2000ft of water which is anywhere from 15-20 miles offshore, depending upon what part of the region you’re fishing out of. Squid and big bonito strips or live blue runners are popular baits, rigged on 300lb mono leader and 10-0 to 12-0 hooks with lights attached at the top of the leader. At night, drift a spread of baits at various depths from 50-400ft on 50-80lb class tackle. In the daytime, an electric reel is recommended because we are fishing on the bottom in that 1500 – 2000ft range using anywhere from 10-15lbs of weight, depending on the current. The swords are typically anywhere from 50lbs to 300lbs or more.
