There are a couple of different ways to go about catching kingfish. One of the most popular, at least in South Florida, is live baiting. Kings will eat just about any live bait. Some of the more popular baits are: pilchard, herring, goggle eyes, blue runners and speedos. And the big kings like to eat big baits. Trolling wire line or planer outfits with 3 ½ to 4 drone spoons, or pink Seawitch with a strip bait work well. Drifting a 1-3ounce triple hooked jig with a dead sardine or ballyhoo is the standard drift fishing rig. Regardless of how it’s done, a piece of number 4-6 wire leader is needed to prevent cut offs. Another way to improve the hook up ratio is to use #2 or #4 kingfish treble hooks. You will definitely miss less kingfish with the trebles.
